Anerley Royal OakSE20 Anerley is a south London suburb that is located in the London Borough of Bromley. Though the entire SE20 is thus named it is worth noting that the area covers Penge and parts of Beckenham in addition to Anerley. The name of the suburb is taken from the Scottish term for ‘solitary or only’ i.e. ‘Anerly’. This term, i.e. Anerly, was the name the Scottish silk manufacturer William Sanderson gave to his house, the first one built here back in 1827. Following this construction, the road between Church Road in Upper Norwood and Elmers End was given the name Anerley Road.

Down the years Anerley SE20 has had its fair share of well known residents. After his retirement the famous plumber Thomas Crapper, whose work in promoting the use of the toilet is well known, settled at 12 Thornsett Road. In the 1920s 14 Thornsett Road was home to the famous ghost stories author and poet Walter de la Mare. Anerley is the birthplace of the famous aviator Arthur Bigsworth who was born in 1885.
